This print is a vivid, surreal tribute to one of West Virginia’s most famous legends, the Mothman. The central figure, rendered in eerie shades of violet and gray, stands with an imposing humanoid form and massive mothlike wings that stretch across the composition. The wings and body are painted directly over a detailed vintage road map of West Virginia and surrounding states, grounding the cryptid in its Appalachian setting.

The Mothman’s piercing red eyes and antennaelike protrusions draw immediate focus, while its wings appear to drip into dark, inky streaks, evoking both mystery and foreboding. Behind the creature, stormy skies swirl above a depiction of the Silver Bridge, a nod to the 1967 collapse in Point Pleasant that forever linked the Mothman to local lore. A fiery glow in the distance heightens the ominous mood.

At the lower left, a compass rose and the words “MOTHMAN circa 1966” are set in blood red lettering, marking the year of the first reported sightings. The combination of cartography, watercolor textures, and unsettling imagery creates a piece that feels both historical and supernatural, a map of place and myth layered into one haunting vision. This original work is by West Virginia artist Katy Crim, whose style merges fine detail with bold, imaginative storytelling.
